You are the one who has the ability to make a difference!
And you do not have to do much.
Take, for instance, climate change. You may think: "What can I do?" "It is bigger than me," "None of my actions can do anything,"
"I am too small, insignificant" ...
I admit, I had the same feeling, but hear me out, just give me a chance, read the text until the end.
Do you remember that clip of a shirtless guy starting to dance alone and everyone else at the concert was just sitting?
First, notice this:
As a leader, I’ve got to have the guts like he did to stand alone and look ridiculous. And that is fine.
For the sake of the story, imagine that I invented a way to fix climate change, would you believe me, or think I am nuts? I know thinking I am nuts is your first instinct, but what if I tell you something that could truly change the world for the better, fast?
The thing I need to tell you must be easy to follow.
And this is it, a very simple set of instructions:
So, for you, especially for the 2nd and 3rd, it will take just a few seconds, but for someone who is starting from the bottom that could mean years of hard grinding, and in case of climate change we do not have years. Each year, each month, each day matters.
Do you see that?
To be among those first followers, your role is crucial. Without you there is nothing.
When you step out publicly, you show everyone else how to follow.
That is what it takes, telling others what you saw and asking them to do the same.
I welcome you as an equal. It stops being about me; it is about us.
And when you call your friends to join in, that’s when things start to spread.
Do you realize how much courage it takes to be one of the first followers?
You’re the one who stands out and risks ridicule, too. Being a first follower is an underappreciated form of leadership.
You’re the one who transforms me from a lone nut into a leader. If I’m the flint, you’re the spark that makes the fire.
What happens when the second follower shows up? It is the turning point. It proves you did your job well.
Now it’s not a lone nut, and it’s not just two nuts. Three is a crowd, and a crowd is news.
Here’s something I want you to remember: a movement has to be public. Outsiders need to see more than just me. They need to see the followers, because new followers don’t emulate the leader... they emulate other followers!
And once two more show up, then three more, we’ve got momentum. That’s the tipping point. That’s when it becomes a movement.
As more people jump in, it stops being risky. If they were on the fence before, there’s no reason not to join now. They won’t be ridiculed, they won’t stand out, and if they hurry, they’ll be part of the in-crowd. Other people just want to be part of the crowd, because eventually they will be ridiculed for not joining.
And that’s how a movement is made. So let me recap what I need you to take away.
Leadership is overglorified.
Yes, it starts with me, and I might get the credit, but you and I both know what really happened: you, the first followers, are the ones who transformed a lone nut into a leader.
There is no movement without you.
So, I want to ask you directly:
Do you have the guts to be the first person to stand up, join in, and show others how to follow?
